There are many neurological disorders that seem to be associated with disordered flow of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The problem with many of these conditions is that there is often not a cure, but rather a set of interventions that exist to try and "fix" the improper flow of CSF.

Dr. Eleuterio Toro gives a fascinating presentation explaining how the flow of CSF is much more complicated than we used to believe, with several other fluid systems other than the CSF flowing in the central nervous system acting on it. Dr. Toro describes how we are using mathematical models to now better understand these complex interactions in fluid flow, and what it might mean for many neurological diseases, inculding syringomyelia and hydrocephalus.

Please allow me to correct/extend my answer to the second question regarding volumetric calculation. As a matter of fact, the very latest version of our model (publication accepted with minor revisions) includes:
1. CSF production in lateral ventricles and reabsorption superior sagittal sinus (classical).
2. Fluid exchange between the vasculature (capillaries) and the brain parenchyma, noting that the fluid is assumed to be identical to CSF.
3. Fluid exchange between lateral ventricles and brain parenchyma.
