The United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) announced plans to acquire M-SAM missiles from South Korea for $3.5 billion.
On Tuesday, the U.A.E. Ministry of Defense confirmed plans in a tweet.
Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) describes the Cheongung II (KM-SAM, M-SAM or Cheolmae-2) upgraded system to be Seoul’s first indigenously-developed medium-range surface-to-air guided missile. The system is built based on technology from the 9M96 missile used on S-350E and S-400 missile systems.
It is equipped with multifunction radar to strike aircraft and missiles simultaneously. The modernization project was kick-started in 2021. The system is said to have recorded a 100% accuracy rate at multiple test launches.
The M-SAM system developed by LIG Nex1 and Hanwha Systems is a core element of South Korea's multi-layered anti-missile program. Employing the "hit-to-kill" technology, the missile is designed to intercept hostile missiles coming in at altitudes below 40km.
South Korea launched the project to develop the M-SAM in 2012. The missile passed a suitability evaluation for field operations in 2017, and its mass-production began the following year.
South Korea is set to mass mass-produce its new mid-range hit-to-kill missile interceptor known as M-SAM following the completion of an operational capability test.
The M-SAM surface-to-air missile will serve as a core element of the country's Korea Air and Missile Defense System (KAMD), currently in the making, against North Korea's threats.
"The prototype of the M-SAM (missile) to intercept an enemy's ballistic missile was rated fit for combat operation by meeting all the requirements at a test early this month," an official was quoted as saying by Yonhap News Agency Saturday.
It marks the completion of the development of the M-SAM system led by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), a state agency for research and development of defense technology, and manufactured by LIG Nex1, a local defense firm.
The development of the M-SAM, a variant of the Cheongung anti-aircraft guided missile was originally scheduled to finish in August but finished two months earlier. It is designed to intercept incoming missiles at an altitude of 20-40 kilometers.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration plans to mass-produce M-SAM missiles starting later this year with the aim of deploying them in 2019.
South Korean is pushing to complete development of KAMD missile shield by the early 2020s.
