"In Good Spirits and Cheerful Mood!". Reporting on the ball for the students of Vienna’s Technical University (the main university did not have a technical faculty) held in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein on 27 January 1877, the journalist for the Neues Wiener Tagblatt noted: ‘Eduard Strauss, who provided the dance music, could not in fact have chosen a better title for his very melodious new waltz than “Oscillation” [sic] – continuous, dancing vibration was the characteristic theme of this ball par excellence.’ In contrast, the Illustrirtes Wiener Extrablatt considered that Oscillationen (to give the work its correct title) ‘did not particularly appeal, but nonetheless received very dutiful applause’. When published, with Strauss’s dedication to the ball-organising committee, the waltz bore a title far more in keeping with its cheerful melodies: Mit frohem Muth und heiterm Sinn!, itself a line from an early 19th-century soldiers’ song. Of particular note is the gyrating Waltz 4B, which is an undisguised reworking of the opening waltz of brother Johann’s dedication for the 1860 Technical Students’ Ball, Accellerationen, Op. 234.
