I decide that the first order of business is recruiting Chambara to our team and click on the “Chambara’s Hut” location on the world map. The game promptly takes us back to the Unforgiving Swamps, where the party slowly makes its way through to Chambara’s house. Ramas briefly complains about how bad it smells in the area, prompting Dora to comment that he doesn’t smell so great, either. Soon, we reach the house and just like the last time, it looks decrepit and unoccupied on the outside. Saren knocks and, when there’s no answer, goes inside. As before, it’s got a much nicer interior than exterior and is clearly someone’s home, but this time there’s nobody present. Knowing Chambara is a shape-shifter, the group calls out to her and expects some creature or insect to transform into her, but nothing happens. There’s genuinely nobody home at the moment. Disappointed, the group leaves the hut empty-handed, but Rei notices something. Being an expert assassin, he’s spotted two sets of tracks leading away from the house. Presumably, one of them belongs to Chambara.

The group follows the tracks, and soon smells a campfire. Following the scent, we soon come to a small camp in the marshes and spot a man there. He’s in rather wild clothing, including what looks like a fedora hat, and has a large sword slung over his back. The group can hear him speaking, and after getting closer to camp it’s revealed that he’s got a large cage with a giant snake inside. The snake is angrily hissing at the man, but he’s pretty nonchalant and is even calling it names like “sugar”. Suddenly, the “snake” transforms into a giant scorpion, and it immediately becomes clear what the situation is. This man, whoever he is, has captured Chambara and locked her in this cage. Sure enough, the scorpion then transforms back into Chambara, who furiously beats at the bars to the cage to her captor’s amusement. We’re going to have to intervene, and Loren approaches the man and orders him to release Chambara. The man tries to flirt with Loren in response, which she doesn’t take well, and Saren steps forward to back her up. Seeing the party, Chambara protests that she’s got everything under control and she doesn’t need our help, but Loren’s not having it. As for her captor, he insists that dark witches like Chambara are fair game for elimination—the game identifies him as a witch hunter—but seems a little cowed when our entire group reveals itself. Recognizing he’s outnumbered and outmatched, he tells Chambara he’ll meet her again and retreats into the swamp. To everyone’s surprise, Chambara then leaves the cage on her own—it appears she actually wasn’t kidding about having the situation under control. As she puts it, letting people think you’re helpless when you really aren’t is a classic trick.

With the rescue complete, Loren asks Chambara to join the effort against Fost. Unsurprisingly, Chambara wants no part of it. Her preference is to stay in the swamp and be left alone, so she starts walking back to her hut. The group has to run up to her to keep up, and continues trying to persuade her to join. As Saren points out, the war hasn’t stopped witch hunters from chasing her like she thought, so there’s no reason for her to consider it a positive thing. Moreover, the swamp itself could be destroyed if Fost is successful. Chambara retorts that the Empire and elves consider dark witches like her to be intrinsically evil, and if she took us up on our offer she’d be vulnerable to them. She’s got a legitimate point, as Saren admits, but Loren promises that if she joins us we’ll protect her from any and all threats, including our own allies. Chambara reluctantly agrees, as long as we do something for her first—eliminate the witch hunter who captured her. His name’s Raven, and she’s apparently faced him before. She says he’ll never stop pursuing her, especially since he knows where her hut is. We agree to find and get rid of Raven, which gives us Chambara’s personal quest. Each non-player character in the game has one, and usually they’re unlocked via dialogue. In the case of Chambara, though, we have to complete it as a condition of her joining the party. We’ll have to go to the town of Lothark, find Raven, and defeat him in battle to both recruit Chambara and gain 300 XP for each party member.
