The first thing we did in our 1930’s rental renovation was kitchen demolition. The old cabinets had been refinished with a horribly rough popcorn finish, the old appliances were all falling apart and covered with decades of cat hair and kitchen grease and had to be disconnected safely. We found lots of evidence of drafts and pests behind the walls and inside the insulation, consistent with issues found in old homes during renovation. We also found an abandoned but live knob and tube electrical box buried behind the wall which will need to be removed safely. This was a much needed and satisfying step to our DIY kitchen remodel.
