Dedicated to the memory of William Wright and Nick Waterlow OAM, this talk by Artistic Director of the 1998 Biennale of Sydney Jonathan Watkins discusses the specificity of the Biennale of Sydney model, themes explored in the 1998 edition, every day, and his subsequent work with the artists and ideas it contained.

Going into detail about specific projects, Watkins discusses the ideas of ordinariness, the everyday and pleasure in simple things that inspired the exhibition, and gives insight into how periodic exhibitions respond to the time and place in which they are created and engage the city itself.

Approaching its 21st edition and 45th year, the Biennale considers its role over time, both in Sydney and in the world. What can we learn from its achievements and controversies?
