Pro-independence leader Xanana Gusmao has made a triumphant return to East Timor.
His low key arrival comes just days after the Indonesian parliament endorsed the results of East Timor's independence referendum, effectively relinquishing control of the province.
Welcomed by hundreds of people, Gusmao gave an emotional speech in the capital Dili.

Trucks with loudspeakers drove through the streets of Dili heralding the homecoming of revered pro-independence leader Xanana Gusmao.

Hundreds of cheering people ran out onto the street to greet him.

Their anticipation of his arrival was hard to contain, many sang songs and danced as they waited for his heavily guarded convoy.

The Australian peacekeepers were also taking no chances, keeping watch in case of an attack by pro-Indonesian militia.

As Gusmao mounted the podium outside Dili's government house there were spontaneous celebrations.
In an emotional address Gusmao brought his followers to tears as he called on them to remember those who died fighting for the independence of East Timor.
Gusmao also praised the people for their courage during their long struggle and urged reconciliation between the pro and anti-independence factions.
Gusmao slipped back into the country aided by Australian troops just a few days after the Indonesian parliament endorsed the results of East Timor's independence referendum.
For many East Timorese, Xanana Gusmao is the father of their newly declared country, and is likely to become its first president.
