We’ve all heard of the term “Butterfly Effect”. Whether it’s referring to the knock-on effect of hard work or, more correctly, the unknown effects of actions in complex systems, the phrase has entered common vernacular. And the 2004 film of the same name, written and directed by Eric Bress and J. Macke Gruber, starring Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart, certainly played a big part in that.

Kutcher plays 20-year-old college student Evan Treborn who experiences blackouts and memory loss throughout his childhood. Later, in his 20s, Evan finds he can travel back in time to inhabit his former self during those bouts, with his adult mind inhabiting his younger body.

With this, he attempts to change the present for himself, his friends and family, by changing his past, leading to unintended consequences for all. And, boy, do these consequences get dark.

Through this darkness, The Butterfly Effect unpacks some pretty weighty themes relating to both its titular facet of chaos theory and existentialism, giving us an interesting lens to see our place in this incredibly complex universe of space, time, cause and effect.
