Jemdangang: Mokokchung’s new organic green tea set to hit markets soon

Organic green tea grown in the Wameken Valley of Tuli Sub-division, Mokokchung, is all set to reach consumers soon. The tea, branded as Jemdangang, is cultivated and produced by Lima Longchar, whose farm is registered with the Tea Board of India, Jorhat, and has obtained FSSAI certification.

The farm, spanning about two hectares, has been operational for eight years. “This year, we have produced about 500 kilograms of green tea, but by next year, we hope to increase production,” Longchar said.

Two families currently manage the farm. Longchar expressed his wish for an organic factory in the future. “In today’s environment and situation when everything is going organic, we really need an organic factory,” he said.

Currently, the green tea is produced using a self-made machine. The process begins with plucking stems, rolling them in the local mat, and drying them using smoke for 3 to 4 hours. Regarding quality control, Longchar said, “We only cut off the infected areas or even use dry chili if needed. So far, we have not introduced any manure as the soil is good in its own.”

Highlighting the benefits of organic green tea, he added, “Organic tea is the highest in antioxidants and helps in skin care, burn fats, digestion, and many more.”

With its authentic cultivation and careful production process, Jemdangang aims to bring a piece of Mokokchung’s agricultural heritage to tea lovers across the state.
