in 2008 the United Kingdoms MoD confirmed plans for a "next generation" Air Craft Carrier to act as the capital ships of the Royal Navy for atleast the next 40 years.

The class of two 65,000 Tonne ships will be the largest warships ever operated by the Royal Navy (a record previously held by the 55,000 tonne battlecruiser HMS Vanguard) The largest warships ever built in Europe, The first Super Carriers to be built outside the USA and will be the third largest warships ever built (behind the USA's 100,000 tonne NIMITZ class & Japans 70,000 tonne Shinano)

They will operate 40 Air Craft on light load with the capacity for 60, The Carrier Group will consist of 36 F-35B Lightning II strike fighters and either 4 Merlin/Lynx Helicopters or 4 V-22 Osprey aircraft. Initially the Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers will operate STOVL air craft however the F-35B Lightning II strike fighters only have a planned service life of 20 years at which point they will be replaced with fixed wing air craft.

The ships will have a crew of 1200; approximately 600 ships company and 600 air crew and will have the capacity for an embarked force consisting of around 600 Royal Marines.

The ships will have S1850M long range radar for wide area search and will have a innovative "two island" design allowing more spacious control rooms for both the air control and ship control. They will have the option to operate 8x Goal Keeper CIWS close in defence machine guns and in the future may be fitted with Aster anti-air craft silo's and missile deterant systems.

The carrier's propulsion system will be Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) with Rolls-Royce Marine Trent MT30 36 MW gas turbine generator units. The ships will have a range of 10,000 nautical miles at a speed of 15knots.
