Something I’ve heard people ask is how much of a difference there is between first and second fill barrels when it comes to aging whiskey, especially when it’s only being used for a few months as a finishing cask.
Well, luckily, we’ll be able to try to see the difference for ourselves today!

We’ve got a single Grain whiskey from Two Stacks, which was matured first in ex-Bourbon casks, before being finished in an ex-white wine and mescal cask. The only difference is that one bottle is from 2024, and one is from 2025, with the cask being re-used for the 2025 bottle.

This means that the whiskey should, in theory, have a much lighter cask influence, and should retain more of the sweet grain profile, but will that make for a better whiskey, or will the stronger cask influence be better? Let’s find out!
