Merida is a pretty good sized city of around 1.2 million people. If you are staying long term it can be difficult to decide what neighborhood is right for you. A lot can depend on your budget and whether you will be working or not and what your interests are. For us, we found the Barrio Santiago to be a near perfect fit. The Netflix series Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat featured a restaurant right here in Santiago inside the market. It’s called Taqueria La Lupita. We’re gonna go check it out.

Despite its relatively large size, Santiago only houses around 2000 permanent residents giving it a charming and laid back feel. One of our favorite things about the Neighborhood and Merida in general is that it is very safe. We have had no issues even walking at night and have not felt out of place once since we arrived. The people here are incredibly friendly and welcoming.

The internet in the neighborhood is fast and the cell phone coverage is flawless. We are able to connect several devices at once and have zero issues with things getting bogged down. The connection is also very reliable. We are downloading at 200 Mbps and uploading at nearly 100 Mbps.
