You have some concerns about your 7 week old little boy. You noticed that he's losing quite a bit of hair, and you're wondering if that's concerning or not. And our hair actually has 2 stages - one is the growth stage, one is the rest stage. And about 5% to 15% of our hair is in the rest stage, and the rest of it is growing. But different things can send it into different stages, like hormone changes, and a baby experiences a lot of hormone changes after their born, and this can affect the growth and the rest phase of their hair, causing more hair to fall out. So newborn hair-loss is actually quite normal.
It's also normal to see random patches of hair that have fallen out. Maybe your baby has a bald spot on one side of their head. This might be due to position. Maybe your baby prefers to lay a certain way, and so you can remedy these types of patches by changing your baby's position when you lay them down for sleep, and by also doing tummy time. It's really cool, actually, if you put a baby in the crib, they'll naturally turn their head towards the door of the room. So if you alternate the side of the crib that you put your baby's head on each time you lay them down for a nap or for bedtime, they'll naturally turn their head from side to side and alternate the side that they sleep on. If you notice that your baby is favoring one side and they don't easily turn to the other side, then talk with your pediatrician about this. Sometimes this is due to a condition called torticollis where their neck muscles are really high, and that's why they favor one side only.
Tummy time is really important too. That gets them off their head, and it also helps to strengthen their upper body muscles, and helps them progress and develop, it helps them learn how to roll over, it can become playtime as they get a little bit older. But in the first couple of months, a lot of babies don't like it, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't do it, just make sure that it's supervised. Put your baby down on a blanket, on the floor so that they can't roll off of something, sit down by them, make sure it's supervised, and just let your baby sit on their tummy for a few minutes, a few times a day. And then as they grow to like it and get more used to it, you can pull out toys, you can make it playtime, and hopefully your baby will learn to like it.
Ultimately, it would be good to bring this up with your pediatrician, and they'll look at your baby's scalp. If there's any redness, if there's little dots or scales, sometimes this is due to skin conditions that can be treated. Sometimes there are medical conditions that cause babies, and adults alike, to lose more hair than what's normal, so the doctor can decide if further investigation or treatment is necessary for those issues.
