What are the best adventure movies?


I agree about Into the Wild, probably the first on my list. There are others i really liked such as:
The Painted Veil with its beautiful scenery of China.
Motorcycle Diaries.
The Talented Mr. Ripley.
The Way.
The Way Back.
Lost in Translation.
Midnight in Paris.
Paris je t'aime.
Up in the Air - I related a lot to this movie as I used to be a frequent business traveler.
Up - childrens movie but you'll get why its for travelers.
Il Postino.
The Exotic Marigold Hotel.
Beyond Rangoon - this movie inspired me to visit Myanmar on a backpacking trip right out of college.

All of the Indiana Jones movies.


Into the Wild captures the spirit of adventure.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Forest Gump, Shoreshank Redemption and Gattaca are worthy efforts too.

Watching Mitty makes me want to skateboard down an Icelandic volcano. Forest Gump reminds me that with a little belief in yourself, you can go far and Shoreshank to "get busy living." Gattaca shows that an indomitable will can overcome all obstacles.

The Goonies, even though it's an allegory for puberty, is a great adventure movie. It transports me back to my childhood which is a great place to start when concocting an expedition.


I guess everyone has their own opinions but most would probably agree when I say that it would have to be the Lord of the Rings movies. They’re solidly long, and they feature a wide variety of places and circumstances, as well as encounters with different beings on the journey of a group of misfits (well, sorta) with unique personalities each to save the world in a spectacular fashion. The interactions between the characters is fun enough to see, as well as learning the history behind every place they go through. Its a masterful piece of storytelling and gorgeous visuals, INSIDE an already great adventure. And the three movies are built on the same story, so a single one out of them wouldn’t be the best, but as a trilogy, they’re as good as it gets.
