This video is for educational purposes. I figure may give you guys some insight on my daughters aspiration to be a Physician Assistant. This was one of those impromptu videos. I had cut my finger on my newly sharpened knife, while trying to cut this large flea/tick prevention medication, for Zeus. The pill is so hard, when I went to cut into quarters, it snapped back, and cut/skived my left ring finger. Well it would not stop bleeding, so it needed sutures. I have had everything from years ago, when I worked in cardiac surgery.
Izzy has wanted to be a Physician Assistant, like DragBoss, and I have been teaching her didactically, and this is her first clinical case. Sutures are need to approximate tissue. Whether in surgery, or from accidents/lacerations. Sutures aid in hemostasis, or controlling bleeding, allow for better healing, and less complications/infections depending on injury. Sutures also allow for better cosmesis/less scarring. These were simple interrupted sutures, with a 5-0 Nylon. There are other suture methods, depending on the tissue you are closing. So I said this would be a great time to learn. My finger would not stop bleeding after 6 or so hrs, also did not stop working, taped it up and continued.
I also did not do it exactly the way I do, we did not wear gloves, and also I made her use two throws around the needle driver, on each, so she could handle the instruments longer. We also did not use forceps to hold and manipulate the needle on the suture. Hey this is DragBoss Garage, had to get back to work. Normally you only need two throws on first knot, then single throw, I like 4 or 5 knots. Also did not prep the wound, as I would, we had already washed prior, and a quick clean with alcohol.
She did a great job, and I am proud of her, at 13 yo, and never handling any of this equipment, syringe/needle, suture, or needle drivers. Give her the thumbs up....
