We live in an era of accelerated transformations not only of machine intelligence and the ubiquitous technologies into which it is incorporated, but also of human communication, knowledge, affect and hence our very nature along with it. Already there are important signs in 2024, as more persons vote in elections this year than any other in human history, that democracy is being profoundly transformed by these new developments. Will democracy survive? To discuss this question, we start from a foundation that integrates insights from a wide variety of fields on profoundly important topics to address questions like: What is machine learning and how does it work? What is surveillance capitalism and how does Google make trillions without selling anything? How does a 21st century media system contribute to the partisan shaping of social reality? What is all of this technology and the way we use it doing to our attention and sense of privacy and autonomy? In today's class, on the basis of this communication, we begin to discuss how the new public sphere is shaping political opinion and action.
