WORLD SOLAR CHALLENGE
The World Solar Challenge has kicked off, with dozens of teams from around the globe, racing from Darwin to Adelaide in solar-powered cars! 34 teams from around the world have set off on a 3000 kilometre race from Darwin all the way down to Adelaide. This is the World Solar Challenge, where students and engineers build their own solar-powered electric cars and drive them through the hot and dry Aussie desert. The event started in the 80s when two guys named Hans Tholstrup and Larry Perkins wanted to find different ways to power cars if our fuel supply were to run out. They ended up becoming the first people to drive from Perth to Sydney in a car completely powered by the sun! And in 1987, they got people from around the world to join in on the fun. Since then, the challenge has seen teams from all over.. travel to Australia to test and to show off their new technology. With thousands of kilometres to go, we'll have to wait and see which team makes it out on top.
PALESTINE PROTESTS
Protests in support of Palestine swept the country yesterday. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in about 40 different towns and cities to demand an end to the war in Gaza and sanctions against Israel. It's believed to be the largest pro-Palestinian rally in Australian history, with organisers saying more than 350,000 people took part, although police reckon it wasn't quite that many.
WOMENS RUGBY
The Wallaroos have claimed Australia's biggest ever win at the Women's Rugby World Cup, smashing Samoa 73-0 in the opening round in Manchester! Winger, Desiree Miller, lead the first half charge, slamming down a hattrick to help take the side to 45-0 by half time. Samoa came back fighting, but another green and gold barrage in the late stages sealed the deal.
CRICKET ODI
In Mackay, the Aussie Men's cricket team ran away, quite literally, with Australia's highest One Day International total on home-soil! The 276-run victory in the third ODI against South Africa came courtesy of centuries from Mitch Marsh, Travis Head, who nearly took out Mitch Marsh in the process, and Cameron Green, who's first century was also the second-fastest century in Aussie ODI History!
MOTO GP
This is moment a camera operator at the MotoGP in Hungary got a little too close to the qualifying action. Thankfully, both he and rider Pedro Acosta were alright, and the action continued into the big race. A wheel to wheel battle between Marco Bezzecchi and Championship leader Marc Marquez kept the crowd on their toes, but it was Marquez taking the chequered flag for the seventh time this season.
AIR GUITAR
First up, to the Air Guitar world championships in Finland! Competitors from 13 different countries performed with their imaginary instruments. This year's winner was The Angus, and you'll never guess what he received for his prize. Yeah. A real guitar.
TREE HUGGING
Now to the World Tree Hugging Championships, also in Finland. Contestants had to hug as many trees as they could in 60 seconds, but each hug had to last a minimum of 5 seconds. There were also categories for most dedicated hug and most creative hug. In the end, it was local father and son duo, Antti and Matti, who took home the laurels.
CORGI RACE
And finally, across the Baltic sea to Lithuania, where hundreds of corgis and their owners have gathered for the annual Corgi Race. There was also a fashion parade which saw corgis dress up as everything from aeroplanes to Labubus.
