NAGUAL ART ~ Revelations: The End of Time

The Book of Revelation is a book of visions. By turns wondrous, nightmarish and bizarre, it describes the destructive end of the world and a new beginning, and although it was one of many such books of visions written at that time, was the only one to be accepted - and then only just - into the canon of the New Testament. It's author is known as John of Patmos or Saint John the Divine. Traditionally the author is John the apostle, although this is chronologically unlikely: the Jewish rebellion against Roman rule took place seventy years after the events of the crucifixion, and Revelation was written some twenty years after that (and then as now, John was a commonly-encountered name). Its author tells us that he was writing it on Patmos, an island off the coast of what is now Turkey. It is possible that he was exiled there by the Roman authorities: an alternative to the death sentence for holding the views which he did.

Had he lived in another culture, John's visions would probably have been regarded as shamanic. They read like reports from other realities, and have inspired artists from Dürer to Turner. My own interpretation does not strictly follow John's sequence of events, although those events do move - as inevitably they must - towards the same conclusion. A new beginning always offers hope, whether that beginning is perceived in a religious sense, or - as here - in a more broadly secular way.
