Because it identifies your face when you hold it near your ear, your Samsung phone will automatically turn off the screen while you are on a call by default. This is to keep it safe from unintentional touches while you're using it. If your phone's screen continues going black while you're talking on the phone, you'll need to activate the Keep screen on while viewing feature.

Whenever the front camera identifies your face and you're gazing at the screen, the screen will stay on for as long as you're using the device. By default, the Keep screen on while viewing feature is on, but you can check manually if you're unsure.
