This video explains how the bison population of America in 1800s got reduced from 60 million to less than a thousand in just 100 years because of the American civil, Manifest Destiny, Gold Rush and the transcontinental railway line laid across America.

When Europeans started settling in America, they were keen on expanding their control over the whole of the North American territory & named this Manifest Destiny. But to fulfill this there was a big obstacle in the name of Native Americans. Native Americans, also known as Indians, were not ready to easily give up their land to the settling Americans, so there was war between the two groups for a long time.

To put an end to this problem, the settling Americans came up with a plan to kill all the bison roaming across the territory. They wanted to do this because Bisons played a big part in the Native Americans' life. They depend on bison for food, shelter & clothing - the three most important things for survival. So, the settling Americans thought that killing all the bison would result in a survival problem for the Indians - fortunately for the Americans and unfortunately for the Indians, this plan worked well because of the strong work by the settlers.

The settlers brought new shooters from Europe by rewarding them three to four dollars for every buffalo killed. They would slow down the trains while passing through the bison grazing area, people would then take out their guns and start shooting all the bison before them. Buffalo Bill, a professional hunter alone killed around 4,282 bison in a quick span of just 18 months. There was also a time when around 5,000 bison were killed in a single day alone. There were many such things implemented to reduce the number of bison and all those plans worked successfully resulting in the near extinction of the bison.

Only after the numbers got reduced to less than a thousand, did the American government under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt lay plans to preserve & conserve the remaining bison to return them back from extinction. This plan worked better the number of bison has now increased to more than 30 thousand.
