What's in a name: the 'violoncello' between 1600-1700.

After the first two online concerts by Elise and Matthijs, this time Anne-Linde made a program around the 'violoncello' and its different appearances in the seventeenth century. This live recording was specially made for our online concert series.

Introduction on the program, by Anne-Linde:

"In the seventeenth century, a ‘violoncello’ could mean a lot of different things. The instrument existed in many different sizes and tunings. The term violoncello is as far as we know first mentioned by G.C. Arresti in 1665. Before 1665 terms like basse de violon, violone, violincino, violetta, violone da brazzo are used (I will spare you the whole list).

In this short online concert you can hear three different types: a bass violin (often referred to as ‘basse de violon’) tuned in B flat, a tone lower than the tuning we use on the cello nowadays. A violoncello, and an even smaller instrument with five strings (often referred to as piccolo cello).

Although it is just an interpretation, I hope it gives an idea of the diversity in sound of seventeenth century repertoire written for bass instruments.

Thanks a lot to Elise Dupont, Emma Huijsser & Alon Portal for their beautiful playing! And also thanks to the Nationaal Muziekinstrumenten Fonds for lending me the beautiful Snoeck bass violin!''
