Happy Kids School Study Tour to Southern Rwanda – A Journey of Heritage and Discovery
On Friday, May 23, 2025, Happy Kids School proudly organized an enriching study tour for 146 students and 14 staff members, exploring the cultural and historical treasures of Southern Province, Rwanda. This immersive educational experience took the learners through Urutare rwa Kamegeli in Kamonyi District, the King’s Palace Museum (Rukari) in Nyanza, and the Ethnographic National Museum in Huye.
✅ Urutare rwa Kamegeli (The Rock of Kamegeli):
The tour began with a stop at this mysterious rock formation deeply rooted in Rwandan oral tradition. Students learned the legend of Kamegeli, a local leader known for his mystical authority and the dramatic tale of how his actions led to his downfall, symbolized by this sacred rock. It sparked meaningful conversations about Rwandan folklore, history, and lessons in leadership and morality.
✅ Rukari Museum – The King’s Palace in Nyanza:
Next, the students visited the Rukari Museum, home to the traditional royal palace and the reconstructed thatched palace of King Mutara III Rudahigwa. Here, learners experienced firsthand the grandeur of Rwanda’s monarchy, the customs of the royal court, the significance of the sacred Inyambo (royal cows), and the evolution of leadership in Rwandan society. Guides elaborated on pre-colonial governance, traditional justice, and the role of cultural heritage in modern identity.
✅ Ethnographic Museum of Rwanda – Huye:
The final destination was one of Africa’s best ethnographic museums, where students explored a vast collection of over 10,000 artifacts representing Rwanda’s history, daily life, agriculture, music, and art. Through interactive exhibits, they gained a deeper appreciation of the diversity and richness of Rwandan traditions and the country's historical journey from pre-colonial to post-genocide society.
🎒 The tour was not only educational but also a celebration of unity, discipline, and national pride. Through laughter, observation, and guided exploration, the students connected classroom knowledge with real-world cultural experiences.
