How can we protect the lungs of young children?

Lungs continue to grow through childhood. An individual’s lung health on reaching adulthood predicts their risk of all diseases (not just respiratory conditions) and early death. Through a recent African birth cohort study, Diane Gray and the Drakenstein Study team have identified factors important for healthy lung development. Many factors can (and should) be modified to protect growing lungs. The children who are at greatest risk for impaired lung growth should be prioritised for protective interventions.
