Hockey is Great, LIFE is BIGGER!
A Campaign for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention

Hello. My daughter loved hockey. She is no longer with us due to a terrible mistake that has crushed her friends and family alike. We lost her in December 2007 to suicide. It's too late for my lost daughter, but it's not too late for us to make a difference and really try and find ways to reverse the tide on what some are calling an epidemic. I believe we can shift the earth and change the Mental Health paradigm, and I have a plan for that. Part of that plan is The Hockey Project.

The Hockey Project is about recognizing the tremendous positivity that comes from the community of hockey, not only in Canada, but around the world. Just watch the world's Olympic athletes shake hands and embrace in the solidarity of their commitment to this sport and this art-form. Look at the flags hanging above the ice in this video. They represent the nations that have come together at the Canadian International Hockey Academy. Eleven countries participated in this video. Beyond the stars of hockey NHL and the Olympics lies what got them there...the community of hockey, small communities across the globe that have found a home on and around the rink, a place to share their intensity for life and their camaraderie in loss and defeat. This is where I saw the potential for hockey to make a difference on a scale that I'd never imagined possible.

The Hockey Project is trying to make a difference for others by shedding light on the darkness of suicide through music and art and I believe that art and the community of hockey is in a unique position with the rare opportunity to raise awareness for and make progress on this globally important issue and cause. Part of that is "The Hockey is Great, LIFE is BIGGER!" campaign.

Although I'm trying to create global awareness, in Canada, where hockey is a national obsession, my fund-raising is supporting Do It For Daron (D.I.F.D.), a well-known Mental Health charity that is supported by many Hockey communities, particularly in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

A little about me and this song?

As a musician and songwriter, I've been writing some hockey songs because my family loved playing shinny and watching all the games. One of my recent ones is called Don't Stop Stompin' co-written and produced by Edmund Eagan (This Hour Has 22 Minutes and The Rick Mercer Report). We collaborated on an amazing music video with nearly a hundred young actors on skates for this tribute to the late Stompin' Tom Connors and the song he wrote called The Hockey Song, heralded as the world's greatest hockey song.
