The proposed legislation seeks to replace the flagship Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Key changes include increasing the guaranteed work days from 100 to 125 and altering the funding model, requiring states to contribute 40% of the costs, unlike the fully Centre-funded MGNREGA. Defending the overhaul against Opposition accusations of dismantling the welfare scheme and centralising control, Chouhan asserted that 'Gandhi lives in our hearts' and the new bill reflects 'Ramrajya'. The Congress and other opposition parties, including the TDP, have raised concerns over the financial burden on states and the removal of Mahatma Gandhi's name.
