 Competition is the type of association in which both the organisms suffer adversely.
 Competition can be interspecific or intraspecific. Generally, the intraspecific competition is more intense.
 Competition can be further classified into
a. Direct interference type: In this the interacting species directly inhibit each other as they come in direct contact with each other.
b. Resource use type: It results indirect inhibition when common resource is in short supply.
 Competitive exclusion principle (Gause’s Principle): In the simplest form this principle states that a complete competitor cannot coexist.
 Abingdon tortoise in Galapagos Islands became extinct within a decade after goats were introduced on the island.
 Lotka-volterra model describes the outcome of competition between two species (coexist or eliminate) and it is based on logistic growth equation.
