King Parikshit was the grandson of Arjuna and the son of Abhimanyu and he is regarded as the link between the end of Dwapara Yuga and the beginning of Kaliyuga.

Once King Parikshit went to the forest for hunting and got lost. Distraught with hunger and thirst, he kept wandering the whole day. Then he saw a hut. In front of the cottage, Sage Shamik was sitting in deep meditation. The king's throat was getting dry with thirst. He called for Sage Shamik several times and asked for water to drink. But the sage was so engrossed in the Brahman, he couldn't listen. The king lost his temper. He picked up a dead snake lying nearby with the tip of his bow and put it around the neck of the sage. As this was happening, the sage’s son arrived near the hut. He saw this unjust behaviour of the king and cursed him.
