CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION (PART 2)

QUESTIONS:
The shaft whose torque varies from 2000 to 6000 in – lbs has 1 ½ inches in diameter and 60,000 psi yield strength. Compute for the shaft mean stress.

Determine the deflection of a 4 x 8 inches steel beam if load of P = 1000 lbs is applied at the center with beam’s length of 25’.

What is the bending moment in ft – lbs at the fixed end of a 10 ft beam with a uniform weight of 100 lbs/ft and a concentrated vertical load at the free end of 1,200 lbs?

Steel railroad rails 10 m long are installed with an initial clearance of 5 mm at 10oC temperature. Assume coefficient of thermal expansion of steel of 11.7 x 10-6 m/m -oC and E = 209 GPa. At what temperature will the rail just touch?

An 8” long steel has a cross – section area of 0.25 in2. After a load of 5,000 lbs has been applied, the length is found to be 8.0065 in. Find the unit stress.
What is the unit strain induced?
What is the modulus of elasticity in psi?
