Installing Xenix | InstallOS

Xenix was a commercial Unix operating system licensed by Microsoft in the 1980s, designed to run on microcomputer platforms such as systems based on Intel x86 processors. Xenix was one of the earliest attempts to bring the robust capabilities of Unix, such as multitasking and multiuser functionality, to the personal computer and smaller server markets, making Unix technology more accessible to small and medium-sized businesses.

Although Microsoft eventually transferred the development of Xenix to SCO (Santa Cruz Operation), it played a key role in popularizing Unix outside of large mainframes and served as an important precursor to many innovations in later operating systems. Xenix is remembered for its contribution to the history of Unix and for paving the way for the development of more advanced and widely adopted operating systems, such as Linux and other Unix derivatives
