Minecraft has published Minecraft 1.18 Experimental Snapshot 1, the latest Java Edition snapshot for the Caves & Cliffs Update Part 2. And it may have changed the game on a fundamental level.

This update introduces new mountain biomes (lofty peaks, snowcapped peaks, grove, meadow, and snowy slopes), lush caves and dripstone caves to natural world generation. The surface terrain now has a much wider range in terrain elevation, regardless of biome - so deserts, forests, plains, jungles, and so forth can generate on hilly terrain without a 'hills' biome variant, and the results can be stunning.
The other major change is that hostile mobs will only spawn in complete darkness - block light level 0 - so torches are now twice as effective, and lighting blocks with levels below 7 can now contribute to spawnproofing. But this may introduce other problems players will have to overcome!

The snapshot also re-introduces other world generation changes like new world height and depth, new ore distribution, new cave generation, huge veins of ore, and local water levels (aquifers). It's worth noting that this is an Experimental snapshot, and any of the changes in this snapshot could change again before a full release arrives!
