Описание к видео AGU Virtual Poster Showcase Fall 2018 – Edgar Gomez & Andre Rodriguez

Improved hydrologic prediction requires accurate precipitation estimates at fine scales (hourly time scale and few kilometers spatial scale). Infrared (IR) based satellites provide estimates at such scale. However, IR based satellite precipitation estimates (SPEs) are prone to uncertainties such as location error when compared with ground-based measurements. Efforts to detect and correct location error in IR based SPEs have been limited. The goal of this project is to investigate location error within NOAA STAR’s satellite precipitation data fields namely; Hydro-Estimator (HE), QMorph (QM) and Self Calibrating Multivariate Precipitation Retrieval (SCaMPR) against Stage-IV (ST-IV) ground-based radar-gauge precipitation estimate by measuring shift in latitude, shift in longitude and combinations of them. The satellite data was shifted in forty-nine different directions over ST-IV until we get the minimum root mean squared error between satellite and ST-IV estimates. The forty-nine frames were created by shifting the satellite data in longitudinal and latitudinal directions ranging from -3 to +3 grid space. The study focuses on tornado cases in May of 2015. The geographic location of the study area is part of “Tornado Alley,” consisting of the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. After correcting satellite estimations for spatial bias, significant improvements were found in correlation coefficients between satellite and ground radar.

The Virtual Poster Showcase (VPS) is an online poster presentation opportunity hosted by the American Geophysical Union that allows students at the undergraduate and graduate levels to share their research without having to travel to a conference. Students are guided through the essential steps of an in-person scientific conference but in an online and asynchronous environment: abstract submission, poster preparation and presentation, and the peer-review process, during which they learn to evaluate each other’s research. To learn more about how you can participate in Virtual Poster Showcase as a student, faculty member or judge, visit https://virtualposter.agu.org.
