There are times when the captain decides they don’t want or need to bat anymore and bring their innings to a voluntary end. This concept is known as declaring.

Ending your innings early might seem a strange choice, after all why not get as many runs on the board before you’re bowled out. But there are many tactical reasons why a team will declare.

Most of the reasons are to do with time. A team may find themselves batting in the third innings of a test match on the final day. With only a day to force a result, the team might declare to give themselves an opportunity to bowl the opposition out and win. However, timing is crucial. The team needs to balance having enough runs to make the chase hard, but also having enough overs left to bowl.

Poor weather might also lead to declarations to try to move the game along, hopefully to get a result and avoid a bore draw. A team might also declare just before the end of a day’s play so a tired opposition have to bat a few overs in more difficult conditions.

However, declarations can backfire, with the opposition reaching the target to win the match. There are no declarations in single inning matches such as ODIs.
