Bay Area fundraising event reveals NGLTF's contempt for disabled
lesbians.
The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force's current agenda has NO guidelines or goals or even a mention in regard to disability rights.

The NGLTF slogan for 2012 is all too accurate: "INJUSTICE AT EVERY TURN" indeed.

Sue Troutman responded to several protesting emails regarding this incident as well as the overall lack of sensitivity displayed by the NGLTF towards disabled lesbians & gay men by basically stating that their CREATING CHANGE CONFERENCE already deals with this issue and, she stressed the phrase "public events", thus separating (and still not *getting it*) about NGLTF's responsibility towards their own.

Here is the pat response Sue had for the emails protesting their behavior:

Dear Leslie,
Thank you for your email and for raising this important issue. The Task Force definitely strives to make its public events accessible -- attached is our two page statement on accessibility, which we include in our Creating Change Conference program book each year. We work with the Disability Justice Collective, formed to help make sure Creating Change and other large public events are accessible. As you can see, we are committed to being inclusive of all LGBT individuals.

The event last week in Oakland was, however, a private event held by a Task Force supporter at her private home. Some Task Force supporters were invited, as were some guests of the host. Private events such as these allow us to raise critically needed funds and to broaden support for our work for full equality.

Please know that we would never assume you or others aren't interested in the broad range of issues the Task Force works on. We do hope to have a Task Force sponsored/hosted community event in the Bay Area on one of our future visits, and I will work to secure an accessible space.

NGLTF clearly doesn't see their tacit acceptance of disability oppression in their actively accepting collaboration with private donor individuals who do not make efforts to make their fundraisers accessible. This. Is. Appalling.
