Large-scale deforestation of tropical forests for palm oil production is a growing problem that threatens the survival of huge numbers of animals and plants, many already on the verge of extinction.

From Season 2 Episode 3 "The Victims of Palm Oil": In Indonesia, almost two million hectares of forest disappear every year. That's equivalent to six football fields being flattened every minute. Oil from palm trees is currently found in over half of all processed foods. At the current rate, nearly 98% of Indonesia's rainforests will be gone in 20 years. For orangutans, elephants, and gibbons, the future is increasingly uncertain.

1000 Days For The Planet - The great adventure of the sailing ship Sedna IV continues. On the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, aggressive deforestation is ravaging the original tropical forest and forcing the last orangutangs from their homes. Gibbons also struggle to find refuge in a few, widely-scattered patches of forest, while the last of the severely threatened wild elephants cling desperately to life under attack from all sides. In the Galapagos, warming waters are wrecking havoc on coral reefs.

Ocean fishing using cyanide and explosives is an ongoing threat to the food security of many villages in Indonesia. From tracking the fearsome Komodo dragon to traditional whale hunting in small boats, an overview of the planet's biodiversity remains worrisome. But the inhabitants of the tiny island of Anuta, cut off from the modern world for generations, may well inspire new approaches for the future.
