Exactly 1 year ago today I became completely paralyzed. I felt the sensation spreading from my feet to my legs, arms, hands then chest. Then I couldn't breathe by myself. Most days I couldn't even shut my eyes, which was hard as I had to communicate using them and an alphabetic board. Some days my body temperature was so high I couldn't stand to have a gown on me...it felt like it was burning and melting my skin. My breathing didn't get better and I had to have a tracheotomy. I lost 2 stone in 5 weeks, contracted a serious blood infection and developed gallstones. The nurses had to cut my hair because they couldn't reach the back to comb it and it was mangled because I tried to move and scream so much due to chronic back spasms.


But after 6 weeks in critical care I was well enough to attend rehab for 10 weeks where I learnt to sit up, stand and walk again. I was in 2 minds about whether I should post this video or not. I don't want sympathy- everyone has their own problems!!! My problem only took a year of my life and I only have tiny scar to show it! I just realized I need to be an advocate for people who have suffered from GBS, who may or may not have made a full recovery like myself; but more importantly I need to do this post for the people who are suffering from this awful disease today.
