Hi there! My name is Miles and I have schizophrenia, or more specifically: schizoaffective disorder. This can make leaving the house a daunting task for me. When I was a teenager my care team was loosing faith in my ability to function in society. I happened to stumble across a video on youtube featuring a psychiatric service dog and when I floated the idea of seeking one for myself to my team they jumped on the opportunity. I was put in touch with a training organization and they already had a dog there ready for placement and advanced training with a new handler! That dog's name was Ace and after many years of hard work, he passed on. Aero, shown in today's video, is the pup currently filling Ace's paws as my partner, guide and best friend! Psychiatric service dogs assist handlers with mental and psychiatric disabilities by performing specific tasks to improve the handler's quality of life. For us this takes many forms. Aero is trained to perform DPT and LPT, Deep Pressure Therapy and Light Pressure Therapy, to help me ground if I become anxious or am hallucinating and need to connect with the present. He's also proficient in light guide work where he can lead me to a bench, an exit or follow an indicated person when I need help navigating in public due to anxiety, distress, auditory or visual hallucinations. He can also locate our cart in case I misplace it. On top of that he's incredibly perceptive when it comes to interrupting behaviors which I exhibit when I'm overwhelmed, irritated or stressed. He alerts to leg shaking, nail or skin picking, and is working on alerting to a new behavior shown in today's video! I still have his 'in training' patches. This is mainly because I feel as if he's at the point where he's ready for his promotion, but am giving him some extra time since our training schedule has been spotty lately due to my condition and it's worsening state. That being said this video outlines some of the training steps we take together when going back out into the world after a long break.
ABOUT THE OTHER TEAM:
Do I follow other handlers and their dogs? Yes, I do. If I notice another team I will, at times, follow them from a distance or make a few passes by them to assess how the other dog reacts to mine. This lets me know if it's safe for me and my dog to continue to shop. I do tend to get disoriented and I need to know that if I ask my dog to guide me to a certain location, that dog won't come after him, bark, interrupt him or cause issues for us. So I will make certain the other team see's us or at least that the dogs see one another so I know whether it's safe. There have been times that I've had to leave the store after doing this because the other dog has immediately begun barking and that stresses me out. There have also been times when I've seen a team from a distance, thought we were all good, only to encounter them head on later and find out their dog is NOT okay with mine. This stresses me out and puts my dog in danger. So yes, I will gauge the other dogs reaction before I continue my shopping. Do I normally film this? No. Honestly I don't like filming in public, but I'd already had my camera on while I was passing by and happened to catch our interactions. This is good for me as well because I can look back at the footage. Anyway, that should answer all team related questions. I'm not saying that this team was invalid, the dog could have been in very loose blocking positions, but it didn't seem that way. I'll leave it up to you to decide. Thankfully there was no barking or interruptions so we went about our day.
