The Katima Mulilo Town Council says plans to build a bus and taxi rank will soon come to fruition, following complaints of flooded hiking points by drivers and passengers.
Due to recent heavy rains, hiking points have become saturated, making accessibility a hurdle.

A resident of Malundu, Ntwala Sinanga, says there is a need to develop hiking points to make them more pleasant for both commuters and transport operators.

" Our hiking station is filthy; for those who listen to the radio, they know very well that our station is in bad condition, and we ask our town council to try and fix the area."

Another affected resident, Maani Musilizo, adds, "The council must find people who can address this problem; just as you are able to see for yourselves, our cars are parked on the sides because with the flooding, there's barely space."

"The problem we are faced with here is the infrastructure; there is no shelter for us to properly get passengers or park our cars. 'We really appeal to the town council, if possible, to at least come up with a temporary solution,' complained local driver Lucky Swanelo.

Katima Mulilo Mayor Kabende Kabende said the council is aware of the issue, and discussions to find a permanent solution are already on the table.

"Plans are underway to have a central or unified taxi rank where all buses and taxis for all the people that are travelling to get to their destinations in the region can hike from. What we have here is a very unfortunate situation in which, as you said, it's not only this place that is affected but every other place; there's no shelter, and there are no ablution facilities."

He said there is, however, a temporary solution.
The council will also look into flood-prone streets in residential areas, including Lyambai, Boma, and Ngweze.

"It's good to note that good road infrastructure is what drives the economy of every town, and as you are mentioning now, for a taxi to refuse to operate in certain areas is unfortunate; it's a concern, so we will have to make sure that together with the roads section, maybe we start levelling and resurfacing some of the roads," Kabende highlighted.
