The best actress Oscar winner was a surprise this year. Especially for those who like me, were following the awards season.
Mikey Madison won the Oscar for Anora, beating the top contender Demi Moore who was nominated for the horror film the substance. I have seen both Anora and the Substance so I can say that the performances by both these actors were brilliant. But I still wanted Demi Moore to win because it’s very rare that the academy recognises horror films. And of course Demi Moore was also in one of my favourite films of the 90s. So there if a soft corner.
The substance was also a very innovative and relevant film.
It is a story of Fading actress Elisabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore, who becomes distressed when her chauvinistic boss fires her from her aerobics show. She soon injects herself with a mysterious serum that promises a younger, better version of herself, but things go horribly wrong.
Warning for people who haven’t seen this film. The gore in this film is not for the faint hearted.
For the reader you, there is a classic whose theme closely follows the theme and plot of The Substance.
This is ‘The picture of Dorian Gray’, Oscar Wilde’s only novel.
In which the lead character sells his soul in order to remain young forever.
It’s only his portrait that will age and fade. So if you liked the substance, you will like this gothic horror novel.
