Years ago, some friends and I performed live at the Philadelphia Film Festival my original soundtrack to the 1920 John Barrymore classic “Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde.” It was always my intention to convert the soundtrack into a collection of songs. Some of the songs have come out over the last little while, but now they are all together as one again, re-mixed/mastered, and accompanied here by a special cut of the film.

During early 1920, Barrymore played the titular characters by day on a sound stage in Brooklyn, while by night he played the title role in Shakespeare’s “Richard III,” and the strain of portraying monsters night and day for weeks on end resulted in a nervous breakdown and time in a sanitarium. There is a distinct “descent into madness” flavor here, but I am reasonably confident it can be experienced enthusiastically and free from the fear of suffering Barrymore’s fate.
