Retired anthropologist David Hope took on a very eccentric project in the early 2000s –he designed and co-created a massive house organ.

Its parts include salvaged pipes and recycled cedar fence posts.

There was one problem, once completed its maker was not up to the task of playing it properly.

Now the farmhouse that was built to house the organ has been sold.

But before it is stripped down and put into boxes conductor Michelle Leonard AOM, organist and Director of Music at St Mary’s Cathedral Thomas Wilson and baritone Andrew O’Connor create a very special performance.

It is the first time David Hope has heard his organ played properly.

Video produced by Catherine Marciniak of ABC North Coast.

Thanks to Meredith Hope for inspiring the performance.

Sound recording and post-production by Jan Muths.
