Tom Cruise & THE LAST SAMURAI in NEW ZEALAND! 🇳🇿 Mt Taranaki New Plymouth | 197 Countries 3 Kids

Join us as we take you on a tour of New Plymouth, New Zealand, and a nearby dairy farm.

The journey to our Home Exchange started with a 4-hour drive from Rotorua to New Plymouth.

Along the way, we decided to stop at a small town called Piopio for a short picnic and coffee break.

As you probably know, New Zealand’s nature is beyond beautiful, so we really didn’t mind the long ride. We were especially happy to be able to see Mount Taranaki in the distance because it’s not usually so clearly visible.

Arriving in New Plymouth, we decided to stretch our legs on the Coastal Walkway and enjoy the beautiful view of Mount Taranaki. We also learned this area is famous for being the shooting location for the Last Samurai movie starring Tom Cruise.

From there we continued on to Downtown New Plymouth, where we took a short walk to look around, and then we were off to our beautiful Home Exchange at a nearby dairy farm.

We had wonderful hosts who prepared us a delicious dinner on arrival and offered to be our tour guides in the morning and show us around the area.

Early in the morning, we decided to tackle the Mangorei Track in the Egmont National Park. It was basically a 5-km-long track made of too-many-to-count steps that led to the Pouakai Hut..

After two plus hours of steep climbing, we were happy to reach the top. We took a quick look at the Pouakai Hut that was full of bunk beds perfect for overnight stays and then it was time to start climbing back down before the weather got worse.

Walking down seemed a lot easier and faster. It took us only 1h 40min to reach the base of the mountain.

From there we headed to New Plymouth to grab some much-needed food and explore the downtown and waterfront area.

The next morning, our host Justin offered to give us a tour of their dairy farm. We saw how they milk the cows, had the chance to pet the young calves and then the girls pretended to be sheepdogs to help move the cows back into the barn.

This was also an educational visit since we learned so much about the animals!! Did you know that cows have 4 stomachs !??
