Text : The aircraft you see is a Mexicana de Aviación Douglas DC-8-64, operated by Mexico’s former national airline. The DC-8-64 was one of the longest and longest-range variants of the Douglas DC-8 family, which was highly popular during the 1960s–1970s. It was characterized by its four jet engines and classic early commercial jet design. This aircraft was used for international passenger services, operating long-haul intercontinental routes, and became an important symbol of aviation’s transition from the propeller era to the modern jet age.

In service, the DC-8 was known for its strength and reliability. However, with the arrival of newer aircraft generations that were more fuel-efficient and offered greater capacity—such as the Boeing 747 and 767—its role gradually declined. In the later stages of its service life, many DC-8s were converted into cargo aircraft, but overall the type has now been retired from active operations. Specifically for the Mexicana livery, aircraft wearing this scheme are no longer in operation, as the original Mexicana de Aviación ceased all operations in 2010 and its entire classic fleet was retired. Today, the Mexicana-liveried DC-8 is remembered only as an icon of classic aviation history and is no longer seen in commercial service.
