Resolving the Common Kukri Snake after 200 Years. 👇
Dear Friends, Our initial intention was to clarify the taxonomic status of the Sri Lankan endemic subspecies Oligodon arnensis albiventer. However, based on our data, we have identified that Oligodon arnensis is actually a species complex and needs to be resolved in order to check the status of any subspecies involved. We have identified three distinct populations within this complex. The south indian and sri lankan population represent the true Oligodon arnensis taxon. We restricted it’s type locality to Arani, Tamilnadu. For the eastern, northern and central Indian population, we resurrect the 219 year old synonym “Coluber russelius Daudin, 1803” , designate a lectotype and assigned it to the genus Oligodon as a new combination. The type locality of Oligodon russelius comb.nov. was restricted to Visakhapatnam, East India where Patrick Russell received one of the syntypes he named as “Katla Tutta”. We also noticed that Oligodon russelius comb.nov. has two color morphs, the narrow banded “North Indian Morph” population is found in northern parts of India and neighboring countries in the Himalayan foothills whereas the “Central Indian morph”, found in central india, southern parts of Andrah and eastern parts of Maharashtra and Madhya pradesh has cross stripes which are comparatively complete laterally and has comparatively wider anterior cross stripes. The western population was described as a new species, namely Oligodon tillacki sp.nov. honoring the German herpetologist Frank Tillack for his contributions to Herpetology, especially towards resolving the taxonomy of Kukri snakes. With the resurrection of Oligodon russelius, we propose the common name “Russell’s Kukri” to be used with this taxon. Currently, Russell’s Kukri is widely used for “Oligodon taeniolatus”. Therefore we propose the common name “Variegated Kukri” for the latter species. With the restricted distribution, Common Kukri or Common banded Kukri was proposed with the new name “Arani Kukri”.
