☆ HISTRY OF MODHERA SUN TEMPLE ☆

सूर्य मंदिर - मोढ़ेरा

कोणार्क के सूर्य मंदिर के पश्चात् सर्वाधिक प्रसिद्ध मोदेश का यह सूर्य मंदिर, गुजरात में मंदिर शिल्पकला का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है। ११ वीं सदी ई. में निर्मित यह मंदिर, पाटन शहर से ३० कि.मी. की दूरी पर रुपेन की सहायक नदी पुष्पावती के बाएँ तट पर, महेसाना जिले के बेचराजी तालुका में स्थित है।

पूर्व की ओर उन्मुख, उत्कृष्ट जगति पर निर्मित यह मंदिर सोलंकी नरेश भीमदेव-१ (१०२२-१०६३ ई०) के शासनकाल में बना है। इस स्थल का उल्लेख स्कन्द पुराण में भास्कर क्षेत्र के नाम से हुआ है। यह मंदिर तीन पृथक घटकों का सम्मिश्रण है अर्थात् प्रदक्षिणापथ युक्त गर्भगृह, गूढमंडप तथा तोरण द्वार युक्त सभामंडप या नृत्य मंडप। तोरण के सामने वर्गाकार बहुसंख्यक लघु मंदिरों से अलंकृत एक आयताकार १७५X१२० फुट का कुंड है जिसे स्थानीय तौर पर रामकुंड के नाम से जाना जाता है। कुंड में उतरने के लिए चारों दिशाओं से सीढ़ियाँ बनी है। कुंड में लगभग १०८ छोटे मंदिर हैं जो विभिन्न देवी-देवताओं जैसे गणेश, शेषशायी विष्णु, नटराज तथा शीतलामाता आदि की विभिन्न प्रतिमाओं से अलंकृत हैं।

गर्भगृह का निर्माण अलंकृत तोरणचाप से सजे लंबे लालित्यपूर्ण स्तंभों से किया गया है। गर्भगृह की बाह्य दीवारें प्रकोष्ट के अन्दर प्रदर्शित द्वादश आदित्यों, अष्टदिक्पाल के फलकों, गौरी के भिन्न रूपों, नृत्यरत अप्सराओं, वादकों इत्यादि से सुशोभित है।

स्तंभयुक्त अष्टकोणीय सभामण्डप का ऊपरी शिखर भाग पर प्रतिमाओं का अंकन है। बाह्य दीवारों पर देवताओ के विभिन्न रूपों का अत्यन्त उत्कृष्ट अलंकरण हैं, वहीं आन्तरिक दीवारों पर रामायण व महाभारत की घटनाओं का चित्रण है। सभामंडप का ऊपरी शिखर कई छोटे-छोटे शिखरों से युक्त है।

सभामंडप के सम्मुख गर्भगृह हैं जहाँ भगवान सूर्य की बारह प्रतिमाओं का अंकन है। गूढ़मंडप व गर्भगृह के मध्य अंतराल है। गर्भगृह में कोई प्रतिमा स्थापित नहीं है। ब्रह्मा, शेषशायी विष्णु, विष्णु के विभिन्न अवतार जैसे वराह, त्रिविक्रम, नृसिंह के अतिरिक्त उमा-महेश्वर, नृत्यरत गणेश एवं दुर्गा, सप्तमात्रिका आदि की प्रतिमाओं का अकंन किया गया है। मंदिर की बाहरी दीवारों पर विभिन्न देवी- देवताओं की प्रतिमाओं के अतिरिक्त मुख्य दिशाओं पर अष्टदिक्पालों की प्रतिमाएँ, नृत्यरत अप्सराएँ, वाढ्य यंत्र बजाते वादक तथा गंधर्व प्रतिमाओं का अंकन है।

Surya Mandir - Modhera

The Sun Temple of Modhera, the most famous after the Sun Temple of Konark, is a fine example of sculpture architecture compared to other temples in Gujarat. Built in the 11th century AD, this temple located in Modhera is situated on the left bank of the Pushpavati river which meets the Rupen river in Bahucharaji taluka of Mehsana district, 30 km from Patan city.

During the reign of Solanki king Bhimdev-1 (1022-1063 AD), this temple was built on a luxuriant jagati, facing east. In Skandha Purana, this place is mentioned as 'Bhaskarkshetra'. The temple complex is a combination of three separate sections. That is Garbha-griha with Pradakshina. Sabhamandapa or dance hall with garbhamandapa and archway. In front of the pylon is a large rectangular tank measuring 175' X 120' feet, decorated with a number of miniature temples. Which is popularly known as 'Ramkund' among local people. Steps are built all around to descend into the pond. There are about 108 small temples in Kund. Which is decorated with idols of different deities like Ganesha, Seshashayi Vishnu, Nataraj and Mother Shitla.

The sanctum sanctorum is constructed of beautiful elegant tall pillars with decorative arched arches. The outer walls of the sanctum sanctorum, the twelve suns depicted in the windows, garlanded idols of the eight gates, various forms of Gauri, dancing nymphs, musicians etc.

The pillared octagonal auditorium has entrance arches. Sculptures are carved on the top of the pillars from all around. Various forms of deities are exquisitely carved on the outer walls. There are depictions of events from Ramayana and Mahabharata on the inner walls.

In front of the Sabhamandap is the Gudhmandap and the sanctum sanctorum. Where twelve idols of Lord Surya are carved. There is a gap between the goodhamandap and the sanctum sanctorum. There is no idol in the sanctum sanctorum. Brahma, Seshashayi Vishnu, various avatars of Vishnu like Varaha, Trivikrama, Narasimha Shivaya, Uma-Maheswara, dancing Ganesha and Durga are carved. Apart from the idols of various gods and goddesses on the outer walls of the temple, there are sculptures of eight gatekeepers in the main directions, dancing nymphs, flute players and Gandhavas.
