🩻 What is a Back Fusion?

When it comes to treating degenerative spine issues, back fusion involves fusing two or more vertebral bodies in the lower lumbar spine (L1 to S1) to stop movement between them. This procedure is typically done through the front (Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion) or the side (Transpsoas Lumbar Interbody Fusion) combined with the addition of pedicle screws for enhanced stabilization.

🩺 When is a Back Fusion Needed?

Back fusions are often recommended for conditions that have not responded well to conservative care or less-invasive treatment plans. A few important factors in determining the need for a fusion include where the pain is coming from, the patient’s main symptoms, and the doctor’s personal recommendations.

🥼 Alternate Treatment Options for Degenerative Spine Conditions:

Fusion surgery is typically a last resort option for degenerative spinal conditions due to its complex nature. Depending on each patient's source of pain as well as the level of severity, your doctor may recommend a less invasive treatment option to begin, such as:
