What is the Punishment for Withholding Zakat?
I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. , by the grace of Allah Almighty, today we are beginning Statement No. 25. and will be describe That what is the punishment for withholding Zakat?, So sisters, brothers friends and elders, Our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, understand the rulings, reflect on history, and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance. May Allah Almighty make this statement beneficial and a source of light for all hearts.
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, it is a financial obligation that purifies wealth and helps the needy. Withholding Zakat is not only a failure in generosity, but it is considered a major sin in Islam because it denies the rights of the poor and disobeys the command of Allah. Both the Quran and Sunnah clearly state severe punishments in this world and the Hereafter for those who withhold Zakat.
Allah Almighty clearly condemns in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 34-35, those who hoard wealth and refuse to spend it in His way:
"And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah, give them the good news of a painful punishment. On the Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell, and their foreheads, their sides, and their backs will be branded with it, (it will be said) "This is what you hoarded for yourselves; taste it."
This verse clearly describes the punishment of those who refuse to pay Zakat. Their wealth will turn into hot plates in Hell and will burn their bodies. The punishment is not symbolic - it is the real result of injustice, because Zakat is the right of the poor.
Allah Almighty makes it clear in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 103
that Zakat is not optional but an obligatory act:
Take from their wealth alms, thereby purifying them and increasing them, and send blessings upon them. Indeed, your supplication is a comfort for them, and Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
Here Zakat is described as a means of purification of the soul and a means of blessing. Therefore, refusing to pay Zakat reflects arrogance, greed and refusal to purify oneself - an act that distances a person from Allah's mercy.
Prophet (PBUH) He gave a detailed warning about the fate of those who neglect Zakat:
Wealth turns into snakes that inflict punishment:
"Whoever Allah has made rich and does not pay Zakat on his wealth, on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will turn into a bald-headed poisonous snake with two black spots over its eyes. The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks, saying, 'I am your wealth, I am your wealth.'"
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1403; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 987)
This Hadith makes it clear that withheld Zakat will not be extinguished, but will turn into a punishment for the owner.
Prophet (PBUH) He said:
There is no owner of a camel, a cow, or a sheep who does not pay their zakat, but they will be bigger and fatter on the Day of Resurrection than the first one and will trample it under their hooves and strike it with their horns. When the last one passes over it, the first one will start again, until the people are judged.
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 987b)
This shows that livestock, if zakat is not paid, will themselves become objects of punishment.
Withholding zakat is not only a punishment in the Hereafter, but its consequences are also in the life of this world. The Prophet? warned:
No one withholds zakat on his wealth except that rain is withheld from the sky, and if there were no animals, there would be no rain at all.
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4019; also authentic in Musnad Ahmad)
This hadith states that groups that abandon Zakat face collective punishment such as famine, economic hardship, and loss of blessings.
After the death of the Prophet, some tribes refused to pay Zakat, claiming that it was no longer obligatory. The first Caliph, Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), declared:
"By Allah, I will fight those who differentiate between prayer and zakat, because zakat is the right of wealth, by Allah if they stop the rope that tied a camel that he used to give zakat to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH)?"
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1399)
This shows the seriousness of zakat - Abu Bakr (RA) considered refusing to pay it as rebellion against Islam.
The punishments for withholding zakat highlight several lessons:
1. Zakat is the right of the poor - refusing it is theft from society.
2. Wealth is a test - withholding zakat shows ingratitude to Allah.
