Описание к видео Australia Birding: Wynnum Wetland Queensland Water Birds

The Moreton Bay wetlands in Brisbane are one of Australia’s richest habitats for water birds — both local and migratory. Because it’s listed under the Ramsar Convention, it’s internationally recognized as a critical site for shorebirds, waders, and other aquatic species.

Here’s a breakdown of the types of water birds you can find there:

🐦 Resident Water Birds (seen year-round)

Black Swans – often with cygnets in the seagrass shallows.

Australian Pelican – gliding and feeding in the bay and lagoons.

Egrets – especially Great Egret, Intermediate Egret, and Little Egret, often hunting in tidal flats.

Herons – White-faced Heron and Pacific Heron (Ardea pacifica).

Cormorants & Darters – Little Black Cormorant, Little Pied Cormorant, Great Cormorant, and the Australasian Darter.

Ibis & Spoonbills – Australian White Ibis, Straw-necked Ibis, Royal Spoonbill, and Yellow-billed Spoonbill.

Magpie Geese – grazing in the wetlands, especially in freshwater areas.

Ducks – Pacific Black Duck, Hardhead, Grey Teal, and Chestnut Teal.

🌏 Migratory Shorebirds (mainly summer visitors, Sep–Apr)

These birds travel thousands of kilometers from Siberia, Alaska, and East Asia to feed on the mudflats:

Eastern Curlew – the largest migratory shorebird, a signature species of Moreton Bay.

Bar-tailed Godwit – famous for its nonstop flight from Alaska to Australia.

Whimbrel – long-billed and common along tidal creeks.

Red-necked Stint – tiny but numerous, scurrying across mudflats.

Grey-tailed Tattler – often seen along rocky and sandy shores.

Great Knot and Red Knot – medium-sized waders in flocks.

❄️ Winter Visitors (May–Aug)

Fewer migratory birds remain, but some overwinter in small numbers:

Eastern Curlew (a few non-breeding birds stay year-round).

Bar-tailed Godwit (some overwintering individuals).

Grey Plover and Pacific Golden Plover can also be seen in small numbers.

🌿 Special Sightings

Ospreys and White-bellied Sea-Eagles hunting fish.

Kingfishers – such as the Sacred Kingfisher perched near mangroves.

Black-necked Stork (Jabiru) – rare but occasionally sighted in the wetlands.

👉 Moreton Bay wetlands are especially famous in summer (when up to 40,000 migratory shorebirds arrive) but are still rich with ducks, swans, pelicans, and herons in winter.

Would you like me to make you a seasonal birdwatching checklist (with resident + summer migrants + winter birds) so you can use it when filming/observing?
