Branca Dias was a Portuguese Jewish lady who in the 1500s, after being persecuted and imprisoned by the Inquisition, emigrated to Brazil. She had 11 children, and as a New Christian, kept practicing Judaism secretly at home. She is considered the first educator of Brazil, as she had a school teaching girls domestic skills. Her generation spread vastly through Brazil’s Northeast, as is explained in an exclusive interview with Dr. Candido Pinheiro Koren de Lima, the great genealogy expert from Fortaleza.
