Theater Butoh - Work in progress in TATWERK Performative Forschung

This work is based on the novel "The Woman in the Dunes" ("Die Frau in den Dünen") written by Japanese writer Kobo Abe.

A man went to a village in a dune to collect insects and was held captive there. As the village was at the bottom of a sand pit, residents need to shovel off the sand almost all day long to maintain their living place safe. The man was held captive in the sand pit and was tasked with shoveling sand for houses and a woman there. He struggled to escape in many ways. He failed whenever he attempted but gradually he got used to living in the house in the sand pit. And he came to find hope in the Sisyphean task.
A man who had taken a trip to be free was confined to the sand pit and came to live there, work to maintain there and live for the sand pit. Kobo Abe, the writer, said ironically that "every work was only sand shoveling and that people could find hope in the totally fruitless labour."
The village in the dunes in here is a metaphor for another phase of a city. The author expressed the deserter's pain and pent-up emotions.
Freedom of transfer. Freedom of not transfer. A round-trip ticket. Social restriction under the name of freedom.

4RUDE is a performing arts unit founded by Hikaru Inagawa in Tokyo in 2005.
The unit aims at finding alternative ways; acting without words and dance based on inner experience instead of focusing on body movements. Their piece include theater and Butoh pieces. Based both in Berlin and Tokyo.

Hikaru Inagawa is an Actor, Butoh Artist, Director and Set designer. Born in Hokkaido, Japan. In 1998-2004 He was a member of the Ku Na'uka Theater Company. He joined almost all work in Japan and overseas. He learned the acting technique based on the traditional Japanese art and Suzuki method from Satoshi Miyagi. In 2005 he founded 4RUDE. Since 2011 he receive Butoh lessons from Yukio Waguri.He gaduated at the Sophia University, Tokyo, as a philosophy major. Since 2013 he lives in Berlin.

Maco is an Actress, Butoh Artist and Performer. Born in Kanagawa, Japan. Maco began her artistic career in the 1980s. After meeting some of the prominent Japanese butoh dancers, she became more conscious of her body in her artistic expression. She received Butoh lessons from Kazoo Ohno and Yukio Wagri. In 1990s she presented many solo pieces in Tokyo. In 1999-2006 she was a member of the Ku Na'uka Theatre Company, and has played main roles. In 2005 she co-founded 4RUDE and she since then appeared in all the performances. Since 2013 she lives in Berlin.
