We are excited to share the highlights of India’s longest cycle rally, organized by ‪@nathulingo‬ under the Millet Kranti Mission. This unique event brought together passionate cyclists and volunteers who joined hands to raise awareness about the importance of millets in sustainable farming and reverse migration efforts.

About the Rally:

The rally spanned an impressive 300 km, starting from Mukhyamantri Awas in Dehradun and concluding in the remote village of Mundoli in Chamoli district, the last village of the last district in Uttarakhand. Over the course of four days, we passed through five districts of Uttarakhand, including Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Pauri, and Chamoli, encountering beautiful landscapes and connecting with local communities along the way.
This initiative was driven by our belief that millets can play a crucial role in boosting local agriculture, improving nutritional health, and promoting climate-resilient crops in India. The Millet Kranti Mission emphasizes the significance of returning to our roots by cultivating these ancient grains, which have the potential to address food security, malnutrition, and climate change challenges.

Key Objectives of the Millet Kranti Mission:

Millet Awareness: Educating farmers, consumers, and communities about the nutritional value, climate adaptability, and economic benefits of growing and consuming millets. As a part of this awareness drive, we engaged with local villagers, encouraging them to incorporate millets into their diets and farming practices.
Reverse Migration: Encouraging reverse migration by revitalizing agriculture and promoting millet farming as a viable livelihood in rural areas. By providing information on millet’s potential, we aim to reduce rural-to-urban migration and enhance local economies through sustainable agriculture.
Environmental Sustainability: Millets require fewer water resources and are more resistant to pests and droughts, making them ideal for sustainable farming practices. This cycle rally served as a platform to advocate for millet cultivation as a climate-smart agricultural choice.
Health Benefits: Millets are a superfood packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Through this rally, we aimed to increase awareness about their role in combating malnutrition, diabetes, and other lifestyle-related diseases, which are prevalent in both rural and urban communities.

Rally Highlights:

• Distance: 300 km
• Duration: 4 days
• Starting Point: Mukhyamantri Awas, Dehradun
• End Point: Mundoli, Chamoli (last village of the last district in Uttarakhand)
• Districts Covered: Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli
• Participants: Cyclists, volunteers, local farmers, and NGO members

Each day of the rally was filled with energy, as the cyclists powered through the mountainous terrain of Uttarakhand, raising awareness about the importance of millets at every stop. Along the way, we hosted community gatherings, engaged with local farmers, and held awareness workshops in schools and villages to spread the message of sustainable farming and the benefits of millet-based agriculture.

Vision for Millet Kranti Mission:

The Millet Kranti Mission envisions a future where millet farming plays a central role in rural development and agricultural sustainability. Through this rally and various awareness programs, we aim to create a millet revolution in India. By promoting millet cultivation, we hope to empower farmers to take advantage of its low-input costs, high yield, and resilience to climate change.

Why Millets Matter:

Nutritional Powerhouse: Millets are rich in fiber, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamins, making them a highly nutritious food source for combating malnutrition, especially in rural areas.
Climate Resilience: Millets are inherently drought-resistant and require minimal water, making them a valuable crop in the face of climate change and erratic monsoons.
Economic Benefits: For farmers, millets offer a cost-effective and sustainable option. Their shorter growing season allows for quicker harvests, and their ability to grow in marginal soils makes them ideal for regions with less fertile land.
